Returns, refunds and faulty products
In the UK, standard returns and refund rights are governed primarily by the Consumer Rights Act 2015 and the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013. Your rights depend on whether the item is faulty or if you have simply changed your mind.
1. Returning Faulty Goods
Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, goods must be of satisfactory quality, fit for purpose, and as described.
- Within 30 Days: You have a legal "short-term right to reject" faulty goods for a full refund.
- Between 30 Days and 6 Months: The retailer must be given one opportunity to repair or replace the item. If this fails, you are entitled to a full or partial refund.
- After 6 Months: You may still have a right to a repair or replacement for up to six years (five in Scotland), but you must prove the fault was present at the time of purchase.
2. Changing Your Mind (Non-Faulty Items)
Rights differ significantly based on how you purchased the item:
- Online, Phone, or Mail Order: You have a legal 14-day "cooling-off period" to notify the seller of a return. You then have a further 14 days to send the item back (total of 28 days).
- In-Store: There is no legal right to return an item just because you changed your mind. However, many retailers offer a 28-day "goodwill" return policy as standard.
3. Exclusions
Certain items are generally non-returnable unless they are faulty:
- Personalised or custom-made goods.
- Perishable items (e.g., food, flowers).
- Hygiene-sensitive items if the seal is broken (e.g., earrings, underwear).
- Unsealed software, CDs, or DVDs.
4. Proof of Purchase and Refunds
- Proof of Purchase: While a receipt is standard, for faulty goods you only need proof of payment, such as a bank statement.
- Refund Timelines: Once a return is agreed, retailers must typically refund you within 14 days.
- Delivery Costs: For online returns of non-faulty items, retailers must refund the standard delivery cost, but you may have to pay the return postage unless the retailer offers it for free.
For further assistance, you can consult GOV.UK's guide on consumer rights or contact the Citizens Advice Consumer Helpline.
